Just a historical FYI, if you look at the older drafts of the protocol 
you'll note that it included a query interface[1]. Later versions 
dropped it due to concerns about complexity and  performance. 
Alas that was before we started tracking such things with Paces 
so you'll have to dig through the 
mail archives for the whole conversation.

I have my own solution for this problem, that of accessing 
the archives that avoids the complexity and performance
issues and still allows flexibilty[2], which I need to write up 
as a Pace.
