method of specifying level of detail in feeds ?

I'm looking at the definition and format of collections, and I'm seeing them
as a debased form of feeds .. that is, they are actual feeds but with some
elements stripped out (and some re-arranged, but that's not the immediate
issue).

So in the same spirit of using batch methods to push sub-entry data to the
server, could we have a method of pulling sub-entry data from the server.
For example, pulling the feed but specifying somehow that the returned feed
should be a titles only feed, or titles+summary, or full-content.
