Well, you're worse off if there are nodes that have the same term but have
Different parents (which WordPress allows). If you strip x:BT then it's
ambiguous which of two such nodes you're referring to--not so if the term
values have the hierarchy implicit. Though I can understand your lack of
enthusiasm for micro-parsing :)

I think it's less important that processors *understand* the hierarchy and
more important that they behave correctly even if they don't--which extension
elements will help with if the blogging profile recommends that the whole
category element should be preserved (again, this guidance obviously doesn't
help with category creation, only assigning of existing categories).
