So the basic problem here is that with the transition from Mac OS 9 to
Mac OS X, Apple swept the *UI* for InternetConfig under the rug. This
stuff used to work in Mac OS 8 and 9 and the back end is available in
Mac OS X.
It's very sad that the "invent aliases for the http: URL scheme as you
go" mentality has taken hold of Apple when they could reintroduce a UI
for InternetConfig media type settings (in System Preferences--*not* in
Safari).
(FWIW, I think dispatching on Content-Type is the right way to go in
the absence of a mechanism for dispatching on XML root element
namespace.)
