Amen, absolutely, +1 to that.

While it'll be great to have the Atom data available as a feed, it's utility for
the per-item interchange is of MUCH greater value.

Much like the FUD slung about early on regarding RSS vs Atom, it's NOT about
feeds.

Correct again, while the feeds may be the /starting point/ for how an engine
finds the data, it's the entry's existance at some other accessible resource
that would be of greater value.
