I've stated my position elsewhere, but I wanted to qualify what you said there. Atom in my mind does not provide extensibility, it provides modularity. Sure, that's nitpicky, but I think it's a useful distinction to hold.

Whether modularity is sufficient for Atom's evolution as a format is a separate matter.
