+1. What I want is an approach that scales up well from the simplest
case (just marking tombstones) to more complicated cases.  Just having
an x:deleted element would go a very long ways towards solving the
majority of use cases I've come across.  The rest would seem to be
covered by having a consistent model of being able to request just the
changes that have occurred within a specific period of time.  Everything
else tends to just be variations on the theme.
