IMO that is not the reason NOT to work on XML DTD. 
The developer community would definitely benefit from an XML representation for iCalendar objects. And would prefer not to have to deal with multiple grammers and parsers as well.

I wouldn't.  Browsers are already too bloated and buggy.  It's bad enough
having my browser crash regularly when I'm trying to find useful
information, but if it corrupted my calendar at the same time that would
be completely intolerable.

Reliability is much more important to a calendaring app than to a browser,
so the calendaring app should be simple and independent, IMHO.
