There's shipping software out there today that supports the current
iCalendar format (more or less - vCalendar certainly). We can't forget that.
Hence my suggestion to make the XML format optional. I'm guessing that CS
software vendors would jump at the opportunity to add the well-hyped
letters "XML" to their feature list. If this does in fact start happening,
we can then think about making the XML format required (and the existing
format optional) for future revisions. If it doesn't happen, then no harm
done.
I believe this to be a practical plan.
