A MUA+CUA could have done that via iMIP.

You don't copy it, but you can reference it (you would get one
body part containing a URI to a MID). A MID is a valid
URI for ATTACH and ALTREP.
And as a MID is a superset of a CID, it can point to other
multipart/related body parts in the same MIME object or different
MIME objects. So you can get one or two body parts with a MID.
