If the alarm code just does the disconnect then it can just as easily do an ABORT can't it? What am I missing here?

This sounds like poor design if some coded alarm system triggers terminating the transport layer session rather than the application command in progress.


It's a failsafe alarm that can be used by an application
to keep the connection from being held open ($$$) on a pay
by the minute cell phone.

You get -  time out - your app is dead and we did
           a favor and closed the connection even
           if that is not what you want.
