Welcome to the Web site for the ietf-disconn-smtp mailing list. At the MailConnect 2 event, many participants indicated that they want a standard profile which permits a full-time SMTP server (such as at an ISP) to be able to pass the mail for a particular domain name to a dial-in SMTP server (such as one at a remote office that only dials in occasionally). Internet standards have only supported destination domains which are directly connected all the time, so that an SMTP sender could always "push" the message to the destination. SMTP's original TURN command was intended to deal with occasional connections but it suffers a security hole and has never seen wide deployment. More recently, the ETRN extension has been put forward. At the IMC MailConnect 2 event it was acknowledged that more work is needed for the specification.
To fill the gap currently, there are many non-standard methods for handling this style of remote/small office connectivity. As Internet mail seeks broad use within corporations, a standard method is required. To this end, this list discusses creating one or more SMTP profiles so that server vendors can build them into their products.
