Lets not cloud the issue. If non-repudiation of receipt is not a requirement, let's
agree on that. If we do want it, please understand that we don't get it with a 997.
We do get it with an AUTACK, an internationally recognized ISO Standard EDI message
designed for this purpose.
In order to achieve non-repudiation, in the absence of a trusted third party, both
parties have to sign something. A 128 bit MD5 digest of the EDI Interchange is a
good thing to have in the package of things that is signed, because both parties can
demonstrate that the digest represents the EDI interchange in question, and neither
can produce another EDI interchange which produces the same digest.

EDI is about a lot more than Orders. Consider financial transactions, shipping,
customs, reports, insurance, etc. What you're proposing, to steal a phrase, is like
putting new wine into old bottles. It doesn't work.
