SMTP is NOT slow. Never been the issue. My mail messages to my colleagues
in Geneva get their in seconds as we talk on the phone. And then there
could be 6 forwarders (all controled by both ends) to deliver the mail.
SMTP suffers the deficiencies of any message queing paradigm. In some cases
this is NOT A PROBLEM and you just use it (we build cars this way. A
message queing system enables all of the computers to talk to schedule each
and every car as it goes through the system).
In other cases, the overhead is just not acceptable and direct control is
called for.
