Now that I understand more about X12.58, I believe the issue is one of 
transactional security, and that interchange level security is an 
application specific issue. I hope I understood it correctly. However, I 
must add that email helps to enable 'secure edi' (which is, in a way, a 
redundant term), but is only a part of the whole edi process, the other 
which may be application specific.
