Re: SMTP slow???

Is not the issue responsibility rather than speed?

In the messaging paradigm - store and forward- a third party may be (not
always) responsible for the message delivery.... and you only know for sure
LATER whether it got there or not.....while in the ssl/http case - one is
always connected and knows instantly whether responsibility was taken at
the other end for receipt of the transaction.

Example: In the type of transactions Chrysler is doing it is more important
that it ALWAYS
be there ...in say... 5 minutes, rather than be there 95% (normal
distribution: approx. a
sigma 3) of the time with in 1/2 minutes, with outriggers of say
10-15 minutes. Tight
requirements are only doable if you ALWAYS know the status and
ALWAYS have
       responsibility till the hand-off.

What you don't have responsibility for -- you often can't control.

Messaging based protocols have their place just as RPC type (http)
protocols have their place.

Important point. A lot of work has gone on in the financial community to
put in place Message-type-RPC
such as IBM'S MQ Series. This, kind of a merger between RPC
and Store-and-Forward, have
a solid place in the arena of transactions across multiple
distributed servers........like ...real time
            EDI...vs. message... based EDI.

That's a separate issue ....later....Rik
