An InterNIC name could be <Wayne.Seifried@aol.com>.

I agree that IDs shouldn't be limited to business-business. For example,
<Fred.Smith@isp.com> won't have a DUNS number, a typical EDI identifier.

For secure communications, the name would probably be derived from
the "distinguished name" on a certificate, or from the registered ID
of a public key. Email addresses could potentially be shared, while
public keys are unique.
