Actually, the present-day reality appears to be that both analysis and
alterations can be done in real time. The timing constraints of FAX may have
been enough to prevent this at the time the protocol was defined, but hardware
performance has caught up since then.
I found out about this stuff by reading some literature for a company that used
to build this sort of stuff strictly for the US government, but now has to look
to the private sector for financing. Makes me wonder what they have that they
cannot even talk about...
