Actually, it wasn't an absurd argument at all, and it raises some good 
points.

4294967295 is in many, but NOT all, ways equivalent to *.  Similarly, 1 is 
in many, but NOT all, ways equivalent to the UID associated with msgno 1.

The ways that they are not equivalent are interesting and unique; and the 
author of an IMAP client should be aware of these properties.
