Clients, by and large, don't really handle either IMAP URLs or
anonymous access, but the users are usually smart enough to handle
typing in "anonymous" as the username and any old thing as password,
as long as the server can also do that hack.
2. Are clients good about keeping their own local flags if the
messages are read-only?
Keeping flag data locally isn't something I've considered before. I
think some clients will always store read state (essentially \Seen)
locally, even if they cannot propogate that to the server, but I'm
not sure. I have seen some clients get really upset and throw toys
from the pram when the STORE fails, though.
