Thanks for the clear explanation. While perhaps out of scope here, I
certainly hope that the link between the client and the IMAP server is
secured. The idea of a message that the sender thought needed to be
encrypted, being sent out in the clear, over a cell phone transmitter, is
a bit disquieting.
Agreed, TLS or mobile equivalent would have to be used. In addition you
also have to have more trust in your server (or more accurately your server
admin or whoever has 'root' access to the server) as a clear-text version
of the message will be stored there, even if only on a temporary basis.
