alert the PKIX working group of a potential intellectual property issue

To members of the IETF PKIX security working group,

This message is to alert the PKIX working group of a potential intellectual property issue associated

with U.S. Patent No. 5,717,758, "Witness-Based Certificate Revocation System."

It is a matter of public record that Corestreet, which owns the patent, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District
Court for the District of Massachusetts (Boston) (civil action # 03-10761-MLW) on April 23, 2003)
claiming that Valicert Inc. infringed the patent.  Corestreet filed the lawsuit after the merger between
Valicert and Tumbleweed Communications Corp. had been announced, but before the merger closed.

According to Intellectual Property Rights in IETF Technology (RFC 3668),
available at http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3668.txt, the events described above and the patent referenced above,
need to be disclosed as part of on-going ratification of the Simple Certificate Validation Protocol (SCVP).
SCVP draft 18 is available at http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-pkix-scvp-18.txt.
