Just as a CA may employ various means to verify a subject's claim to a name, a CA can employ analogous means to verify a subject's claim to a logotype. In fact, this may be relatively easy to verify if the logo is a registered trademark (something a CA could require via its CPS).

Unfortunately it's not that easy. As a CA I would simply refuse to add logo types to a cert because the CA could be in charge for trademark abusing afterwards. There are currently too many such cases going to court because some lawyers want to make a lot of money out of it (e.g. setting a link on the web page to a name which is considered to be similar to a trademarked name). Well, we have the same issue with organization field though...but the lawyers did not discover it yet.

Ciao, Michael.

Michael,

This is not a problem, it's a local decision by a CA and that's fine too. As I noted, this aspect of the logotype extension issue is really quite similar, if not equivalent, to the problem faced by a CA when trying to decide if a claimed DN is acceptable.
