About restrictions on length of certificate fields

Hello PKIXers!

Is anybody willing to explain whether is there any sort of restrictions, 
imposed either by consequences of standards or by practice or common sense, on 
the length of seemingly unlimited-length X.509 fields like subject, or 
subjectAltName, etc. ???
