Md5 passwords in database

Hi,

I'm storing my users in a pgsql database.
at the moment, I store the passwords in clear text :/ what is no good 
solution.
Now i want to know, if sasl is can read md5 passwords from databases.
I tried it once, but it did not work for me..
If you need configuration details please tell me
