Welcome to the Web site for the ietf-smime mailing list. The ietf-smime mailing list discusses sending MIME messages in an interoperable, secure fashion using S/MIME. The mailing list is the vehicle for the S/MIME Working Group in the IETF. The Working Group's charter explains the goals and tasks of the group.
To join the mailing list, send a message to:

There is an HTML-based archive from 2000 to present of the mailing list, and an archive from 1996 to 1999. You can also access the text-based archive from 2000 to present and archive from 1996 to 1999 as a single text file. Please read through the archive before posting to the mailing list, since many topics of interest have already been discussed.
See the SMIME's working group's charter for a list of the Internet Drafts and RFCs that are part of the WG.
A separate mailing list has been formed for discussing the examples in draft-ietf-smime-examples. See the ietf-smime-examples web page for more detail on the second list.
A list of all of the OIDs associated with S/MIME is available at http://www.imc.org/ietf-smime/oids.html.

Many S/MIME implementors are also interested in PKIX. The following links are the binary examples from the PKIX part 1 draft.
The S/MIME certificate structure is based on work being done in the IETF's PKIX Working Group. S/MIME developers should probably be familiar with the work being done in that Working Group.
The RFCs for S/MIME 2 are:
