I have debugged X.400 messages and transmission between MTAs.
I find X.400 an order of magnitude more difficult to debug 
than RFC822/RFC821. It is hard to find out what's broken
and where.

I have no problem with transmission of binary *body* parts
though. As long as the header and envelope fields are line
based.
