SMTP and FTP...
John (Klensin),
"Where does SMTP-extended stop and X.400 start?"
SMTP + RFC 1154 (or other multi-part multi-structured nestable encoding)
stops at the SMTP-X.400 gateway and X.400 begins there. And it ought
to be more or less reversible.
"Where does SMTP-extended stop and file transfer begin?"
Afraid it's really the other way around. By adding file-system-object
encoded message parts (to 822 not SMTP), we have wiped out quite a bit
of FTP traffic here at Prime. You don't have to know the passwords,
just mail it. If the network glitches, it will get through eventually.
And without your waiting for it to complete.
Cheers,
David
