Re: Lastest drfat of RFC-XXXX
I have a continuing concern that the operational complexity of the
dual-stack (i.e., 'wretched') solution is tending to escape people's
appreciation. Hacking it to work on a small scale probably isn't
all that difficult, especially given that many people do it now.
Getting it to work on the global Internet EMail system is another
thing entirely. The fewer components of the infrastructure that we
have to diddle, the better. Requiring that all of the intermediate
MTAs support 8-bit cannot possibly be viable on a global scale.
Requiring that only the sender and receiver user agents be upgraded,
and even allowing a receovery path if the receiver isn't upgraded,
seems vastly more workable, to me. In fact, there even is a recovery
path if the receiver hasn't upgraded, yet, since the 8-bit-dat-in-7-bits
can be extracted by hand and run through an independent program.
