The problem with a new port is knowing when to use it. How do you tell which port a system wants mail on? This problem can be solved, but it is difficult enough that I think the cost is too high unless there's significant advantage to be gained by switching to a different protocol/port. Hence my desire to solve more than the 8 bit problem in any new protocol. Ned
