Mark, it has been suggested that I'm incapable of giving a
one-screenful summary of the current temperature. However...
-- Anyone wanting to use any extension sends EHLO in lieu of HELO. The
server responds with a list of keywords representing extended
capabilities it is prepared to support and optional supplemental
information. "Syntax error" from the server is construed as "no
extended features".
-- The two extensions specified at this time are 8bit transport for MIME
files and information about file sizes. Any other real or imagined
extensions in ZZZZ have been dropped or deferred. The semantics of 8bit
transport requests are roughly the same as they have been for a year;
the syntax uses a keyword on the MAIL FROM statement after the address,
rather than an alternate statement. The semantics of size requests have
been streamlined a bit from a year ago, but are very similar; again, a
keyword and argument on MAIL FROM is used when there is client
announcement.
-- All but skeleton provision for, and information about, conversions,
transition strategies, etc., have been removed to other documents that
are now in preparation. Those documents are intended to become WG-
endorsed informational documents, not standards.
-- Anyone who doesn't want to support 8bit and has a conforming
implementation of 821 need not do anything to conform to this new work;
the extensions are strictly that. And, returning to the decisions of a
year ago that were altered in San Diego, it is possible for a
server-client pair to utilize SIZE without signing up to get involved
with 8bit support.
I trust that about covers it, and validates your beliefs. And that it
is not too much over a screenful.
