ABOUT THE IETF-TLS WORKING GROUP
=====================================
Enclosed is information on the IETF-TLS Working Group, its
web pages, list services, and associated documents.
Please read the IETF-TLS Working Group Description (see below) for
information about the specific goals and deliverables of this
working group. The IETF has many working groups related to the
Internet -- a list of those working groups is available at:
<http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/wg-dir.html>

Description of the IETF-TLS Working Group
-----------------------------------------
Several methods of providing a secure and authenticated channel
between hosts on the Internet above the transport layer have
appeared. The objective of this proposed working group is to write
standards track RFC(s) for protocols using the currently available
Internet drafts as a basis. The SSL, PCT and SSH protocols are
examples of mechanisms of establishing a secure channel for general
purpose or special purpose Internet applications running over a
reliable transport, usually TCP.
The IETF-TLS Working Group is a focused effort on providing security
features at the transport layer, rather than general purpose
security and key management mechanisms. The standard track protocol
specification will provide methods for implementing privacy,
authentication, and integrity above the transport layer.
The work currently under way in the area of secure IP is outside the
scope of this working group. Also, general authentication mechanism
discussions are outside the focus of this group. However, best
efforts will be made to utilize as much as possible of the already
existing technologies and methodologies in the IETF and other places
to solve common problems, such as key management.
The group may also produce an informational RFC to describe
conventions for the interface to a Socket (or transport) layer
secure library to build specific applications as well as TCP port
number conventions for running secure versions of network
applications.
Note: This working group is jointly chartered by the IETF Security
and IETF Transport Area.

WEB INTERFACE
Many people find the web interface to this list much easier to use than
the email commands. Everything you can do with email can also be done
through the web interface. The home page for this list is

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
To get a list of detailed instructions, send a message to
Help@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
<mailto:Help@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
As per IETF guidelines for working group lists, the list addresses will
also work if "-request" is appended to the end of the address.
POSTING TO THE LIST
Every time you post a message, hundreds of other people on the list
receive a copy, just as if you sent it to them personally. As a member of
the list, you will receive a copy of every message anyone else sends. On
this list, only members of the list can post to it. However, you should
keep in mind that anything you post will be archived and may be available
to non-list members.
Contributions to the IETF-TLS Working Group mailing lists imply
license for the list to distribute these contributions to other
members of the list and for the list to store the material in an
archive accessible to the general public. However, in all other
respects the author continues to control the copyright of each
contribution.
To send a message to the list, either reply to a message you receive or
create a new message addressed to ietf-tls@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
<mailto:ietf-tls@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
IETF-TLS General Discussion
---------------------------
Discussion of implementation issues is appropriate on the
IETF-TLS Working Group lists *IF* such discussion might
affect any document being authored by the working group
(such as to point out an unreasonable burden on
implementors or to ask that a protocol spec include
an implementation suggestions).
Requests for general help are discouraged: you should at
least peruse the list archives, FAQs, the Internet Drafts,
and the RFCs issued by the working group before asking
for help.
IETF-TLS Announcements List
---------------------------
The IETF-TLS Announcements list is a moderated list intended
only for important announcements regarding IETF-TLS Working
Group and the IETF standards process. You do not need to
subscribe to this list if you are a member of the discussion
list as all announcements will be sent to the discussion list.
