255 of what? In the world of UNicode, ISO-10646 and UTF-8 you can choose
between at least:
a) Octetts
b) Sedecupletts
c) 32-pletts
d) Characters (of varying width)
Since some alphabets need three octetts per character in UTF-8, a limit
must not be too restrictive. Though I guess, 510 octetts will satify
all needs.
