  I think there's an issue of perspective here, most of us use and/or run
large sites with many feeds, and if one goes down we have to rely on a
report to show no posts offered from a site. At least *I* don't get
beeped if a feed goes down;-)

  But for a leaf site, depending on a single feed from one site, or a sat
feed, or a such feed, having a backup is really useful, and you have the
Devil's own time doing it unless the support is present. I'm not sure
"optional" is the right balance of progress vs. history.

  And UUCP over TCP is still probably the best way to feed a low
bandwidth connect, even if it is full time. Compressed and streaming.
