Gnus understands the former; the latter resulted in three underscores, a
bold backspace character, and "baz" (which makes logical sense).

I think the present text should be changed to only document the first
form, as I don't think any terminal emulator or major news reader ever
understood the second. It's unfortunate that the method that works is
less readable in a newsreader without support for it.
