I think the thing which needs tackling first is the matter of whitespace
in the Newsgroups header. That is the only feature where you cannot use
the new functionality until large number of relayers worldwide have made
the change (so we are talking a couple of years, at least).
The change itself is trivial to make AFAICS. In Cnews, you just remove the
check that rnews insists on making for this case. After that, it all goes
through, I think. I imagine much the same applies in INN - just remove the
check. In which case a simple patch for both INN v1 and v2 systems would
do the trick.
Note that warning was given long ago in son-of-1036 that this relaxation
was going to happen. In fact, I am surprised that Henry did not then
follow his own advice.
