There's still the question whether it is better than the current
situation: At the moment, the user will see a new group and an old
group. The old one will - eventually - go away and it's articles
are basically lost. If a user replies to any of these posts, we do
have exactly the same problem.

No, the server would not show the user the old group, so the user
would neither try to reply there nor start any new threads there.
They would instead read the posting in the new group, where it has
been moved to, send a followup there and the server corrects the
newsreader if it does use the old name for the Newsgroup (and/or
Followup-To) header.
