The case I had in mind was where the Oldgroup was treated as "not
existing" by the server. So if you crosspost to Another group plus
Oldgroup (where the server knows Another but not Oldgroup), then the
server has to allow the post. Obviously, if there is no crossposting and
you post to just Oldgroup, then the server can say "I don't know any of
the groups posted to" and refuse it.
Of course, if the server is clever enough to know that Oldgroup is aliassed
to Newgroup, and does not allow posting to aliassed groups (or some
equivalent cleverness) then it can refuse posting with a suitable message
(which the newsreader might or might not then show to the user).
But with the absolute bare minimum implementation, it might be as I said.
Anyway, we have now heard from two implementors, and we are not a whole
lot wiser. How do the readers of this group wish to proceed? Should I call
a Straw Poll on the basis of the sort of minimal scheme I have been
proposing (exact details to be worked out if the Poll shows sufficient
interest to proceed)?
