That's not exactly true. Much of Usenet is comprised of (in most cases
bidirectional) gateways of mailing lists. Entire hierarchies (some
quite large) are devoted to this.
Would Usenet survive without them? Probably. Would Usenet be harmed
severely as a result? Without a doubt.
