If this is a problem for you, you use an inappropriate client, I
would say. Or you are not familiar enough with the mailing list
related functions of your reader.

No. We are talking about having no change at all to the Reply-To
header because it destroys any contents the author wished to be
set.

Depends on what John puts in the Reply-To header of his mails (if
he puts anything there at all).

Right. That's why modern mail readers have functions to distinguish
between answers to the author only (reply), to the list only (list
reply), and to both (group reply).
