Oh hogwash! I'm reading on this machine with PINE 3.91 which I installed
along with the o/s on Aug 22 1995, and it knows how to save any MIME type
it doesn't recognize, as does every mail agent I've used which had any
support for MIME at all.

Being a moderator requires at least a tiny bit of effort and competence,
and unless there's some actually used mail software which can't save an
attachment in a file, I would say the effort will be less rather than more.
