Then we're in agreement, both sides are going to have to do some work.
I'm not opposed, nor any of the other "IMAP folks" that I'm aware of, to
picking up a shovel. My problem is with the attitude (perceived or
otherwise) of "we're going ahead with 8-bit and screw everybody else".

My main point is that we should make every effort to be compatible with
everybody, but backwards compatibility with existing standards should
take precedence over making sure we don't break a small minority that
willingly strayed from the beaten path. IMO, because of the nature of
the problem we won't be able to satisfy everyone, someone is going to be
left behind and it might have to be the raw 8-bit folks.
