I don't care about how it _was_. I care about the software running
_today_. I also don't particularly care _why_ the software does what
it does, whether that's for historical, technical, or religious
reasons. If software in common use today, and very likely in use next
year and the years after, has some requirement, that's a good reason
for catering to that requirement.

I also see no interoperability reason, indeed no reason other than
"philosophically, it's nicer" to not require the space.
