So what? Neither is a requirement for a mailing list message.

If you had been reading the mailing list messages with any modicum
of care, you would have noted one or more of at least four fairly
recent references to the fact that John reads and replies to messages
via the mailing list archive web site. And a cursory examination
of that web site reveals that the mailto URIs associated with the
"Reply" links do not include References fields. A closer examination
reveals that the mailto URIs also botch fields (specifying "reply-to"
where "in-reply-to" should be used), but that's another matter.
