And as has been pointed out to you before, the sentence to which you
refer has been copied verbatim since RFC 733, which predates use of
the message format by other applications. The point remains that
RFC 2822 defines a message format, and that format is used by mail
(RFC 2821) as well as fax, EDI, voice messaging, and other applications.
