The part where vi is supposed to "provide a 'click'". Either you're being
unclear or you have no idea what vi is.

In the case of vi, "the system" has no way to provide a default.

Are you claiming that if a user is_ not_ using vi, then it is *not* his
responsibility to ensure that an appropriate (unclear what you mean
by "acceptable") subject is provided?

If you mean to say that the user is unconditionally responsible for
ensuring that an appropriate subject is provided, then simply say so
and move on. UI design issues are outside of scope.
