Okay, if there must be a limit then sticking to an established
number below 256 is fine at least for the PASCAL fans ;-)  From
time to time the question of "excessively" long Message-IDs is
discussed in de.admin.net-abuse.news, because some tools and
UAs (especially OE) don't like this.  Even some news servers
are unhappy if the unfolded References are "excessively" long.

For "excessively" read "something below 250 or (1+3)*250 + 18".
