But a posting agent is not so obviously a sort of gateway.

I think the answer is that it may be a Posting Agent and it may be a
Gatway. but in fact it will often be a confused situation where the four
parties involved (first injector, second injector and the two injecting
agents) all have a different view of what role they are playing, whether
by accident, by misunderstanding, or by deliberate intent.

True, though one of the parties might believe he was relaying.
