Well first of all one needs to invent internationalized newsgroup names.
We did a lot of work on this once, but it got shelved. But essentially, we
just wanted to let them be in UTF-8. But you need some clear rules as to
exactly what characters are allowed where.
But in the meantime the EAI extensions to allow UTF-8 in email headers
have been published as an experimental RFC, so the proper way to proceed
would be to extend EAI to cover Netnews as well.
So the first question is whether this group should do it, ot whether we
hand it over to the EAI group and let them do it (we would participate
there, or course). I think we need to hear some views from Harald on that.
And we would also need to bring in some of the Scandinavians who were
active on this group at that time.
But when we have internationalized newsgroup names, then indeed IRIs would
need to be thought about (though that too arises on the EAI WG).
