Re: whois in the host location

Salvatore,

This list is for the discussion of the whois protocol, defined in rfc954,
and related protocols such as rwhois, defined in rfc2167, for "Birds of
a Feather" sessions held at IETF-51, and IETF-49. There is another whois
list as well, with a slightly different focus.

Because the actual whois protocol can be written as (thanks to Rick Wesson)
       C: [::printable::]\r\n
       S: .*\r\n <socket close>
it is unlikely that any "whitepaper or tutorial" exist, though the subject
is mentioned in survey texts.

When I worked for Nokia Research I proposed to a co-worker that locality
data could be used, both for network analysis (work along this line has been
done at CAIDA), and for "local" services. There was a BoF on the subject at
IETF-48, some overlap with the mobile ad-hoc working group (manet), and a
deep connection with ntp.

If your interests are along the lines of this, then this mailing list isn't
what you are looking for. Simply adding geo-data to a whois-like database was
done in the uucp mapping project.
